May always starts off with the Shrimp Festival. We had a great crowd staying with us, most of whom were repeat guests. The parade went right in front of the inn and we all had a close-up view. These small-town parades are a real community effort. Sometimes it feels like everybody who lives here is in the parade. This year’s parade even featured Felix and his Mom.
And May is the month for weddings. Jennifer and Jason came to us for an overnight visit from Jacksonville to get hitched. A few days later Gary and Liz arrived from Anchorage, Alaska for a 5-night visit and a wedding in our courtyard. We also had guests from England with us that week. We figured out that Alaska and England are pretty much the same distance so it was a tie for the “Guest From Furthest Away” contest. The next day a nice young couple from Luxembourg checked in and won the contest.
This weekend is our third wedding. Mark and Lisa have come down from Virginia and have the whole inn booked for their friends and family. They are both marine biologists and have brought 400 of their closest clams with them. Our in-house chef, Grant, is doing the catering for the event and he steamed up some test clams for us yesterday. Mmmm, tasty. The wedding is this afternoon with yours truly presiding and tables full of Chef’s food to follow. He’s been prepping all morning and the house smells great.
The weather is perfect this time of year for weddings, touring or just hanging at the beach. Eighty degrees, sunny and no humidity yet. Captain Carol has spotted a few manatees so you know the water is warming up. Summer is coming but so far it is still Spring time in Fernandina Beach!
