February is for Festivals

February 8, 2014 by theAddison

Amelia Island is host to three festivals throughout the month of February that highlight a wide platform of artistic endeavors.

The Amelia Island Chamber Music Festival has concerts on February 9th, 11th and 15th as part of their WinterFest program.  This are advance presentations with the main concert series running in May.  These concerts are followed by the Amelia Island Book Festival on the 21st and 22nd.  The Book Festival hosts writers , workshops, a readers workshop and the opportunity to meet authors like David Baldacci.

Our third festival in February is the popular Amelia Island Film Festival featuring six award winning feature films, a documentary series, international film series and an Oscar night party.  The Film Festival runs from February 27th through March 2nd with films being shown in venues all over the island.  Check out their website and order your tickets early.

The festivals offer something for everyone, all month long!

Dog Days of Summer

August 7, 2011 by theAddison

The dog days of summer are here with every day hitting at least 90 and nothing but sunshine.  Summer in the City, the Loving Spoonful song, keeps running through my mind “All around people looking half dead, walking down the sidewalk hotter than a match head”.

Even Maggie Doone is feeling the heat.  Our morning walks are getting shorter and she stops at each corner to see if we are turning around and heading back to the inn.  Here is a photo of One Eyed Louie hiding from the heat.  Both dogs seem quite content to relax in the air conditioning either here at the Addison or down at the Green Turtle.  Those cool tile floors at the Turtle must feel great on Louie’s belly.
Just like that Loving Spoonful song though, the evenings are quite pleasant, just right for strolling through the historic district and grabbing some ice cream at Fernandina’s Fantastic Fudge Shop.  A frozen yogurt shop is opening soon on Center Street giving you another option for cooling down.  Our guests have been listening to some great live music all through downtown once the sun sinks into the west.  A few of them even braved the heat to attend the SunSplash reggae concert down at the beach this weekend.
As hot as it gets here we take comfort that we have cooler weather than a lot of places.  We are 10 degrees cooler than Jacksonville and way cooler than south Florida, Atlanta or the metro DC area.  We also have these ocean breezes that keep the air moving.  We are still running our Dog Days of Summer Free Night offer right through to the end of the summer.  Escape your heat, stay with us for 4 nights and one of the nights is free!
And Babe, don’t you know its a pity
That the days can’t be like the nights
In the summer, in the city
In the summer, in the city.

Amelia Island Chamber Music Festival

May 15, 2011 by theAddison

What is the first thing that comes to mind when you think “Chamber Music”?  I always think of Jack Nicholson in The Witches of Eastwick.  Early in the movie he attends the local chamber music concert and practically drowns out the musicians with his snoring.  It would be a different story if he had attended the Amelia Island Chamber Music Festival.

This is the festival’s 10th year and they have a pretty impressive line up of talent coming to the island, a line up of artists that stretches the concept of traditional chamber music.  Their program of concerts this year includes chamber ensembles, tango and flamenco, American roots, jazz and contemporary music.  Many of the musicians are world-class including the Tokyo String Quartet, violinist Rachel Barton Pine and native American flutist R. Carlos Nakai.

The Addison will be hosting Brazilian jazz vocalist Luciana Souza, guitarist Romero Lubambo and percussionist Cyro Baptista.  Together they will be performing the concert “Beer and G Strings, From Bach to Bossa Nova” on June 9th.  They will be staying with us at the Addison and playing at the La Tierra Prometida just a few blocks from the inn.  I’ve already got tickets for Shannon and myself and am looking forward to expanding my musical horizons.

The Festival is offering a great discount to our out-of-town music lovers.  Stay at the Addison and receive a 50% discount on concert tickets!  You can check out the whole schedule at Amelia Island Chamber Music Festival and order tickets on-line or by calling 904-261-1779.  Give them your Addison confirmation number and they will give you your 50% discount.

The Festival has so many great acts that they have had to expand the concert schedule to fit them all in.  The Festival runs from May 20th through to June 19th.  Check out the schedule, reserve a room at the Addison and get your 50% discount for the concert.  It is that easy.  Drum roll, please…..
