Another wedding at the Addison

April 18, 2009 by theAddison

One of the best parts of being an innkeeper is when you have a house full of couples who have never met before but they become friends and hang out together while staying with us here at the Addison. We had such a group here earlier this week.

Suzanne and Ed got married here on Tuesday and the whole house got involved. Suzanne had booked our Elopement Package and were all set for a quiet ceremony in our courtyard at 6:30 in the evening. Well, Happy Hour was still going on while the service took place and afer the “I Do”s were done the whole crowd gathered in the courtyard for congratulations and a toast. Ed and Suzanne got picked up by Boomer for a carriage ride around town and the party broke up. It was time for dinner!

Shannon and I went down to Arte’s Pizza for some of their great brick oven pizza and we ran into a couple of our couples who were all out having dinner together. While we talking to them Boomer rolled past with the newly married couple in tow so there was more cheering and waving.

This was a fun group. Friendships were made, couples connected, people got married, e-mails were traded and maybe sometime, somewhere, they will get back together. Maybe we will get to host the reunion!

More Weddings!

The weather has warmed up, Spring is in the air and the moon is full. Nothing says “romance” like a full moon. Or a wedding. We have had several weddings here in the last few weeks and more are coming.

We started out with a vow renewal Ann and Adam have been married for 20 years and have been renewing their vows every five years. They wrote their own vows which really personalized the service. This is a picture of Adam reading his vows off of his i-Phone. That is me in the middle. Ann was more traditional with her vows written on paper. Adam vowed to continue loving Ann until “they shovel dirt in his face”. Like I said… Romantic. Adam and Ann stayed with us for a whole week and we all had fun together. They really made the Happy Hour happen.

We had another couple that purchased our elopement package. The service was more traditional with the groom in military dress uniform and the bride in a cocktail dress. We found out later that his family knew about the wedding but hers did not. Her family is planning a BIG wedding for her for next year and she didn’t want to spoil it for them.

We’ve got the Concours d’Elegance car show this coming weekend and a big wedding the weekend after. They have booked the whole inn for the weekend and have the guest rooms full of family and friends. I’ll see if I can get some pictures of that wedding and put them up here in a couple of weeks.
In May we have another wedding that we will be doing the catering for. The bride and groom are both marine biologists and they are bringing their own clams. Our chef, Grant, loves cooking clams and he’s working up a menu around them.
Meanwhile, Spring is springing and stuff is happening in Fernandina Beach. Another clothing store has opened up on Center Street and an empty bank building on Center is being permitted for a new restaurant with outdoor patio seating. The farmer’s market on Saturdays is really filling up now that winter is over with lots of good vendors. Come on down, escape that last little bit of winter at home and catch some optimism! Better yet, come on down and get married. Don’t forget, every marriage I perform is guaranteed!

Our First Wedding

November 6, 2008 by theAddison

“By the power vested in me by the great State of Florida, I now pronounce you husband and wife!” I never thought I would live to see the day when I got to say those words but here we are, performing weddings in the Addison’s courtyard. George and Harlene were the first two to get hitched by me. That’s me on the left.

The day started out dreary but the sun broke through at noon, just in time for the one o’clock service. I was surprised by the number of other guests we had who came back to the inn to watch and give a little round of applause at the end. The service went well and as far as I know, they are still married.

We have had quite the run of elopements this Fall. Here are a couple of our most recent couples.

I am so confident of the Elopement Special that I offer this guarantee: If, for any reason, your marriage does not work out you can come back to the Addison (regular rates apply) for a week of couples counselling. Your intensive sessions will include a king-sized bed, whirlpool tub, visits to the local day spa for a couples massage, shopping, fine dining at the local restaurants and moonlit walks through the historic district of Fernandina Beach.

The Elopement Special is turning into quite a popular event. We have three more elopements booked this year and have three full weddings booked for next Spring. With the Elopement Package for $85 you get a dozen roses in your room and me performing your service. We have a nice selection of services to choose from and even do vow renewals. Need a best man? A maid of Honor? We’ll contact the Fernandina Beach Pirates Club and rent you a pirate. That’ll put the “Ahhrr!” in getting married.
