Happy New Year! We had a nice sized group tonight for our Happy New Year Happy Hour. Everybody showed up and had a great time. Earlier today I took Maggie Doone down to the Turtle for her afternoon snack (Stan just spoils her with daily treats) and one of the local gals said we could get some shrimp, right off the boat, if we acted fast. Her brother had just come in on one of the shrimpers. We picked up 4 pounds of some great fresh shrimp and brought them back to the inn. A little cleaning and shelling, some garlic and frying and we had our Happy Hour snack. Fresh shrimp, garlic toast, beer and wine; what more could you ask for?
This has been a great year for Shannon and myself. We re-opened the inn on January 15th 2008. We managed to struggle through the first couple of months. Two big deadlines were on us all through January and February. We had our first full house weekend in March for the Concours d’Elegance and we had photographers coming to shoot the inn for the new website the week before that. We scrambled and had everything ready. After that it was just a matter of giving people what they want and making them happy.
Our guests really seem to like what we are doing. We won BedAndBreakfast.com’s Best Of The South award this fall and we have been consistantly rated as the top B&B on Amelia Island by TripAdvisor.com. Both of those accolades are based on guest reviews, not only the positive comments in the reviews but by the sheer numbers of the reviews. We have had hundreds on on-line reviews from guests who buy into what we are doing here. It feels good.
So, here it is New Year’s Eve. Our guests are all heading out for dinner. Cafe Karibo is having a $25 all you can eat oyster roast with champagne. Several of the great restaurants we have are booked solid so I’ve been recommending the Green Turtle with Chef Nori’s great food served cheap. The guy they had playing guitar last night also played this afternoon and tonight the Turtle has a jazz band playing.
We’re just waiting for one more late arrival to check in and then I think we’re going to do a little bar hopping. Most of our guests will be out on the beach watching fireworks at midnight but I’m pretty sure Shannon and I will be in bed well before midnight.
We have our first reservation today for our DC Escape Special. The couple lives in Alexandria, just outside of DC, and aren’t prepared to handle the 4 million people visiting the DC area for President Obama’s innaugural celebrations. If you live in DC, Virginia or Maryland you get 35% off weekday rates that week.
We’re also doing another Special in January. Book two nights (one must be a Saturday) and get Saturday’s dinner free. We have Chef Grant Heaslewood preparing 3-course menus for our guests all through January. Free stuff is good, come on down and join us!
