We don’t usually see big birds walking the streets of Fernandina Beach so this one was worth a second look. This Great Egret was strolling down the Ash Street sidewalk in front of our inn yesterday. He (?) was a nice sized one standing around 3 feet tall.
Captin Ritch, one of our local boat captains, tells me that these birds were hunted almost to extinction because of their feathers. This isn’t a great picture of the tail feathers but apparently the feathers were big demand hat decorations back in the day.
Maybe he’d come back if we stocked the fountain with fish?
