A repeated theme of this blog site is the vibrant economy of Fernandina Beach. This really is a happening little town. In the last 6 months we have had 2 clothing stores open, a new deli, two new bars and other small businesses that enhance our guests’ experience while they are here with us. Another new business has opened and I’m really excited about this one. Hardley Cruizers is now open for business in Fernandina.
These bikes are heavy duty beach cruizers that have had a small gas engine attached. They are built locally in a shop just a few blocks from the Addison. They go up to 35 MPH and get well over 100 miles per gallon.
The best part though is that these bikes are real head-turners. Each one is custom built and painted. I saw a few at their Shrimp Fest display down at the Green Turtle and these guys know what they are doing. Their bikes are sharp!
The name Hardley, of course, is a parody of the Harley brand. Their motto “Its a pig, not a hog” also references Harley Davidson. Sales have been brisk and one of the owners, Todd Pitney, says a lot of Harley ownners now own a Hardley beach cruizer.
The next time I get a free hour I’m going to check out the shop. I’d better do it quick before someone buys them out and moves production to a bigger factory off the island. I’ll be able to say “I knew them when…”
