Here’s the educational part of today’s post…
There are 48 bells weighing 5 1/2 tons with the largest bell weighing in at over 2000 pounds. Each bell is connected to a baton-style keyboard via wire cables, cams and transmission bars. The truck, trailer and carillon weight 43,000 pounds. The whole thing is designed to fit into a standard 40 foot shipping container so that it can be sent anywhere.
According to their website “Sensations of seeing the carilloneur play, hearing the bells and feeling the vibration of sound blend into a unique and dynamic musical experience.”
I am definitely going to go check this out. I’m not much into the whole bell ringing thing but the mechanics of the carillon would be interesting. I just hope the island’s bridges can support 43,000 pounds.
Changing the subject….
Last weekend we had the Concours d’Elegance on the island. We had a full house of mostly repeat guests that come every year for the car show and it was great to see them all again. One of our guests (Thanks, Scott!) was good enough to send me some photos of the cars. There isn’t room for all of the photos here but I did stick them into an album on our Facebook page. Check them out, they may inspire you to go outside and polish some chrome on your own car.
Back to the bells….
Did you notice how I managed to write an entire blog post about bells without using the word “hunch”? It was tough, but I did it!
