We get asked by a lot of our guests “Where is the best place for seafood?”. We are a funny seaside town, not big on crab or lobster, but very big on fresh fish and shrimp. Most of the local restaurants will serve up a good selection of fresh fish. The preparation and selection of the fish usually depends on the chef in the kitchen so always ask to be sure that your fish is fresh.
My favorite place for fish is the place with the freshest fish on the island, Atlantic Seafood. There is no chef in the kitchen, there isn’t a kitchen at all, but when I want fresh fish for cooking at home Atlantic Seafood is where I go to get it.
Charlie (in the photo) runs Atlantic Seafood and is there 7 days a week, every day of the year, open at 7AM. They sell seafood to the local restaurants, to the locals and to tourists looking to take some fresh fish home with them. The store is in the Marina and is a great stop for those sailors who are passing through Fernandina. Atlantic Seafood is now also a great place to stock up on beer. They have added a couple of big beer coolers and have about 30 different brands in stock. Perfect for a day trip on an eco-tour or for stocking up the sailboat as you breeze through Fernandina.
I visited Charlie yesterday and picked up a pound of sea scallops. A hot frying pan with olive oil, garlic and sun-dried tomatoes. Sear the scallops in with the tomatoes and garlic, flipping a couple of times as you go. Pour the contents of the frying pan over pasta, toss, and get ready to eat. Nice and lite, no heavy cream sauce required. A little freshly ground Parmesan goes well on the top. Fresh, easy and tasty.
