Historic Sites Near Amelia Island  

Fort Clinch State Park 

The history of Fort Clinch dates to the 1730s, but the fort as we know it began being built after the War of 1812. The fort was under Union Army control during the Civil War starting in 1862. Moreover, during World War II, the fort was used as a joint operations center for surveillance and communications. This is a short history of the fort, so be sure to visit this historic landmark along with other state parks and travel back in time!  

Amelia Island Lighthouse   

The Amelia Island lighthouse is the oldest in Florida and was constructed from the bricks of the Cumberland Island Lighthouse in Georgia. This incredible monument has withstood the test of time, guiding sailors into the harbor. This lighthouse is operational today, and the light can be seen for 15 miles! Historic Downtown Fernandina Beach  

Downtown Fernandina Beach is an incredibly special place because it is the site of the last Spanish city in the Western Hemisphere. The original city plat from 1811 is well preserved, and many of the homes in the area are from the 19th century. Because of Spanish influence, the downtown area is the perfect place to see the history of our city. 

Palace Saloon  

In the mood for a drink? Visit the historic Palace Saloon! Founded in 1903, this saloon is the oldest in Florida and dates to Fernandina’s heyday in shipping. Walk the historic district streets, and grab a seat at the bar; you might even hear a story or two!
