The History of the Eight Flags Shrimp Festival
The Isle of Eight Flags Shrimp Festival was first established in 1961. Amelia Island is located off the coast of Florida and has a long history of shrimp fishing. In fact, the island was once known as the “Shrimp Capital of the World.” The festival pays tribute to this important part of Amelia Island’s history and culture. Additionally, the “Eight Flags” portion of the festival’s name alludes to the island’s persistently changing political allegiances from 1562 to 1862, moving back and forth between under the control of the French, Spanish, English, Patriots, Green Cross, Mexican Rebels, Confederacy, and finally, the United States of America.
